Each year we offer our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils an exciting residential opportunity as part of their time at Fellgate Primary School.
Residential visits are a valuable and memorable part of school life. They give pupils the chance to develop independence, confidence, teamwork and resilience, while enjoying new experiences outside the classroom in a safe and supportive environment.
During the residential, pupils will:
· Take part in a range of fun and challenging activities
· Build friendships and strengthen teamwork skills
· Develop self-confidence and independence
· Create lasting memories with their peers and staff
The visit is carefully planned and fully risk-assessed, with experienced staff accompanying pupils throughout the stay. The safety, wellbeing and enjoyment of all children are our top priorities.
Children enjoy taking part in cookery sessions, making use of the food technology room in school. Staff plan progressive lessons, teaching a sequence of skills while allowing children opportunities to apply their knowledge and consolidate learning. Cookery lessons provide great opportunities for children to explore a range of new foods, while applying skills such as weighing, measuring and reading from other areas of the curriculum.
Access to this area affords us the opportunity to work upon the particular areas of need any given pupil has. Restricted and unbalanced diets are common experiences for autistic children. The use of this area allows us to introduce foods with colours, texture and aromas that are new to our pupils, without upsetting their established lunchtime routine. We also use this time to introduce the use of utensils for preparing and eating food. This can be a long and steady process, but we consistently experience good outcomes without potentially reducing the dietary intake of pupils at lunch times.
At Fellgate, we aim to promote positive mental health for every member of our staff and all pupils. We pursue this aim using universal, whole school approaches as well as specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable pupils.
To promote positive mental health in school, we adopt a whole school approach towards developing a positive ethos and culture – one where everyone feels that they belong. It involves working with both pupils and families while making sure that the whole school community is welcoming, inclusive and respectful.
Good mental health and wellbeing across the school will maximise the children’s learning potential – this will be achieved through the personal development curriculum, early support for pupils, fantastic staff-pupil relationships, effective leadership and a commitment from every single person involved with our school.
To support children, who may need support during a difficult time, we offer a range of supportive interventions: small group work; one-to-one nurture support; breaks in our purpose built, multi-faceted sensory room; relaxation periods; and mindfulness sessions. Every class uses the zones of regulation to teach children how to self-regulate.
